Congratulations, Sophie! What a great video- have fallen even more in love with your project... Am going to keep my eyes wide-open on my commutes now- who knows, right?! ;P
Wonderful! I love your work and have started reading Missed Connections for fun. You're right that once you starting reading them, you see them everywhere! Thanks for your work in making these "unfinished stories" into art.
Congrats! I've been following your blog for some time and I'm in love with it. This video was amazing and it was so nice to see you talk about your work.
Hey, I follow your blog and absolutely love it! The quirky situations and great illustrations make me smile. Just wanted you to know I featured you in a post: http://joiedejane.blogspot.com/2009/11/missed-connections.html Congrats on the film and keep up the great work!
Fantastic doc Sophie, love the recreations (wanted to see "We Shared a Bear Suit" in there too!) congrats and looking forward to the next illustration!
Hi Sophie! I'm a frequent visitor in Ny and I cannot but agree with what you say about feeling invisible when lost in a big town... it's a tuff feeling as it makes you believe you might be worth nothing, but still there are so many possible connections in the air that make you feel you're in the perfect place to take your chance in life.. Thank you for your wonderful work! You're amazing!!! C
Dear Sophie, You create poetry for the eyes. Thank you for sharing your work on your blog. I was recently at Copperfield's Books in Calistoga, CA, when a particularly appealing children's book caught my eye. "These illustrations are so spirited, so purposeful, yet still so delicate," I thought. "And the style is so familiar." I flipped back to the cover, and lo and behold, saw your name. "Of course!" I thought. And now that book, Red Butterfly, is back at home with me in Rhode Island, and is a treasured memento of my California vacation.
everything about this i love...along with the messy haired guy at the bookshop and the shy guy on the till in the foodhall who smells like a real life gingerbread man and blushes when he smiles
But..... Don't you think lots of connections (perhaps a majority) are intentionally missed? I can think of numerous reasons: shyness, fear of rejection, coming off a bad connection, already married, racial/religious/gender stereotyping, low self-esteem, etc. It's said that where there's a will, there's a way. Is it likewise true that if there's no will, there no way?
Too many connections are not missed; they're sabotaged.
Someone sent me a link to your blog a couple of months ago saying I would probably like it. "Like" is an understatement. I had a similar project in mind some years ago, but not being a great illustrator, just contented myself with posting the texts of the strangest missed connection I could find. With your incredible talent you've done something more beautiful than I could have even imagined. As one commenter said above, it's like poetry for the eyes.
I'm glad they've taken the time to put together a video which showcases your labour of love so well.
So nice to see the person behind this incredible blog! Your illustrations are amazing and your creativity is applauded and appreciated! Please keep them coming!
I just stumbled upon this blog... I have to tell you.
Quite awhile ago I found out my first and only crush (who had liked me but acidentally set me up with another guy) had stopped liking me. Just dropped it. I was just crushed because - my whole life - I had never let myself like another like that before. I called my best friend to tell her the news and before I knew it her really great guy friend (who I have yet to meet) grabbed the phone from her and said "Hello beautiful. Tell me about your day." I was so taken back I could hardly speak. I later found out out you live your life in a wheelchair and it has not been an easy road for you. I just wanted to thank you for making me feel beautiful when I felt completely rejected. You are incredible and I hope to meet you someday.
I am sorry if a comment is not the place to put these stories.. but I couldn't resist! I've always wanted to tell someone that. Thank you for the oppertunity to say it.
Great video, Sophie, it explains a lot. Just wanted to tell you that I stop by every Sunday morning to see what's new and to post a link to your site from my page on Multiply so my friends can visit too.
Lord knows how many connections I've missed over the years and I still think about many of them.
It's hard to know what to do in the moment, though, isn't it? You can get up your courage and lay it all on the table. You can be bold and fight for love or passion or commitment or whatever it is you think you have a chance of. It takes courage...
I am new to this blog, and although somehow attracted to it already was wondering what the real concept of this blog is, how are the pics posted.. This is when I went thru this lil clip that helped me understand it completely. Great blog! Amazing!! I will drop by regularly to go through them all. Thanks.
I love the video shared in your site. It is really interesting. Actually I am getting girl costume ideas online. Please share some new and fresh ideas for me.
Referring to the new job you should check the professional review of resume services and decide where to order your resume online. If you don't have the writing skills, stop torturing yourself and let the professionals create your resume for you.

Messages in bottles, smoke signals, letters written in the sand; the modern equivalents are the funny, sad, beautiful, hopeful, hopeless, poetic posts on Missed Connections websites. Every day hundreds of strangers reach out to other strangers on the strength of a glance, a smile or a blue hat. Their messages have the lifespan of a butterfly. I'm trying to pin a few of them down.
Congratulations, Sophie! What a great video- have fallen even more in love with your project... Am going to keep my eyes wide-open on my commutes now- who knows, right?! ;P
